What Makes an Engagement Ring in Singapore Truly Yours?

Summary:

  • A ring chosen for its unique color, shape, or luster often transcends passing trends.
  • Colored gemstones bring a sense of individuality to an engagement ring. While some, like sapphire and spinel, are perfectly suited for everyday wear, others simply require a bit more considered care.
  • From the classic lines of an emerald cut to a contemporary toi et moi or a sculptural solitaire, each design speaks its own visual language.
  • Moving away from convention, Singaporean couples are embracing engagement rings as a true reflection of their unique love and personal style, making bespoke design the new standard
  • Ultimately, the journey begins with two distinct paths: selecting a refined, ready-to-wear piece, or co-creating an engagement ring tailored to your desires from the very first conversation

In Singapore, the engagement ring is no longer defined by a single formula. While the classic diamond solitaire remains a timeless choice, many couples are exploring distinctive paths that more deeply reflect their personal style

Colored gemstones, distinctive diamond cuts, and bespoke designs have expanded the possibilities of what an engagement ring can be. Whether chosen for a particular gemstone, a preferred cut, or a unique design detail, the ring reflects an individual style rather than a single prevailing trend. For many couples, this sense of personal connection is what gives an engagement ring its lasting appeal.

Choosing a Coloured Gemstone

Coloured gemstones have become an increasingly popular choice for engagement rings, offering an alternative to the traditional white diamond round centre stone.

While blue sapphires are a timeless classic, the world of fine jewellery offers extraordinary paths for those seeking true rarity. Highly coveted treasures like spinel, Paraíba tourmaline, and Padparadscha sapphire represent the pinnacle of luxury, rivalling or even surpassing traditional sapphires in prestige, scarcity, and value.

This shift expands into a spectacular palette. Fancy colour sapphires captivate in rare pastel blues, lavenders, teals, and yellows, while spinels stand as a collector’s favourite for their brilliant, distinctive shades of red, pink, and slate grey. Most coveted of all is the Paraíba tourmaline, reminiscent of glowing Maldivian seas, prized for an electric hue that complements diverse skin tones beautifully.

These exceptional gems bring complete uniqueness to our clients. Just as they found their true partner in life, they find a perfect, rare reflection of their love in these shades.

Practical considerations are as important as aesthetic ones. Hardness, for example, plays a key role in how a stone wears over time.

Stone

Mohs Hardness

Everyday Wear

Sapphire

9

Excellent, copes well with daily knocks

Ruby

9

Excellent, as hard-wearing as sapphire

Spinel

8

Very good, a sturdy everyday choice

Emerald

8 to 7.5

Good, though worth a protective setting; handle with care

Paraíba tourmaline

7.5 to 7

Moderate, prone to abrasion; handle with care

Opal

5.5 to 6.5

Delicate; good for regular wear

While many are drawn toward a gemstone for its beauty and particular colour, others prioritise durability, rarity, or symbolism. There is no single right approach; the best choice is always the one you feel most strongly about.

As you explore different gemstones, pay attention to the combinations of colour, cut, and setting that consistently capture your eye. These elements provide a beautiful starting point when discussing bespoke jewellery designs with our team at the atelier.

Beyond the Classic Solitaire

Colored gemstones are not the only way to express individuality. For those captivated by diamonds, exploring uncommon cuts, unique shapes, and creative design elements offers an equally bespoke result.

Every diamond shape articulates its own visual language, emphasising distinct qualities of brilliance, symmetry, and proportion. Below, we outline some of the most sought-after options.

Cut or Setting

Characteristics

Marquise

An elongated shape that can create the appearance of longer, slimmer fingers while maintaining strong brilliance.

Emerald Cut

Defined by step-cut facets and clean lines, offering a more understated appearance than brilliant-cut diamonds.

Sculptural Solitaire

A solitaire design in which the setting plays a more prominent role, creating a distinctive overall silhouette.

Toi Et Moi

Features two stones set side by side, often chosen for its symbolism and visual contrast.

Which Type of Engagement Ring Is Right for You?

Most people begin with a general sense of what they are drawn to. It may be a particular colour, a style they keep returning to, or a design that feels more aligned with their preferences than a classic solitaire.

Once preferences become clearer, the decision typically narrows to two paths in Singapore: selecting a finished design or commissioning a bespoke engagement ring.

Unsure of your preference? Book a consultation to explore both ready-made and bespoke options in person.

Ready-to-Wear Designs

A ready-to-wear design may suit you if:

  • You would like to see and try on the ring before making a decision
  • You are working within a defined budget
  • You have already found a design that feels right
  • You prefer a shorter timeline

Ready-to-wear pieces offer greater certainty in terms of design, cost and delivery.

At Calla Lily, we offer 3 distinctive collections with finished pieces, available to view and explore as they are.

Bespoke Engagement Rings

A bespoke commission may suit you if:

  • You have a specific design in mind but have not found it elsewhere
  • You would like to build the ring around a particular gemstone
  • Details such as proportion, setting and finish are important to you
  • Personalisation is important to you

While a bespoke ring requires more decisions and a longer timeline, it offers a deeper personal connection and greater flexibility in how the final piece is brought to life.

At Calla Lily, our bespoke engagement ring process typically involves four key stages.

Step 1 – The Initial Consultation

Begin your journey by sharing your vision, inspirations, and preferred investment range. Together with our designers, you will explore a curated selection of exceptional gemstones. This initial conversation is where your unique preferences naturally begin to take shape, whether inspired by a specific colour, an uncommon silhouette, or a meaningful reference point.

Step 2 – Gemstone Selection & Creative Discovery

Immerse yourself in a hands-on experience as you view and try on a curated selection of gemstones. Think of this as a creative discovery session, a collaborative space where our designers sketch quick concepts in real time to align with your thoughts. Once you choose to embark on this bespoke journey with us, your project is formally initiated with a $1,000 deposit (fully credited toward your final piece) or through the selection of a gemstone valued at $1,000 or above.

Step 3 – Design Development

From our initial concept, we develop two to three beautifully rendered design directions for your review. We will explore these proposals together, refining your chosen path through up to two rounds of revisions to ensure every nuance is perfect. Once the final design is confirmed and the quote is approved, a 50% deposit secures your piece for production.

Step 4 – Craftsmanship & Completion

The piece is then handcrafted in our workshop, where dedicated attention is given to each stage of production. Exceptional work takes time, and our team focuses deeply on preserving the design details you’ve discussed with us. While our artisans work behind closed doors, our lines remain open; feel free to reach out to us at any point during the wait. We will be in touch with you as the ring nears completion.

Where Your Journey Begins

If you are unsure which path is right for you, an in-person consultation offers the perfect clarity. Seeing the play of light on a gemstone and viewing designs side by side provides an intuitive sense of connection that online research alone simply cannot replicate.

Many find it easiest to clarify their path in conversation with someone who understands both the artistry of design and the subtle nuances of your vision.

Your first step is to book an appointment at Calla Lily, where you can view gemstones and explore bespoke engagement ring design directions in person. It is often within these personal conversations that ideas truly begin to take shape.
